In 2024, Adulting ran on Kickstarter for 44 days. 269 backers pledged $18,330. Women in Animation partnered on the campaign, and creators like Jorge Gutierrez backed it and shared it. But the goal was one all-or-nothing $100,000 wall. The campaign reached 18%, so every backer was charged nothing, and nothing got made.

269 people pledged $18,330 against a $100K all-or-nothing wall. It came up short, so nobody was charged and nothing was built.

ShowSparks · soon A stage you can clear

Here, the first stage is sized for support like that, and it delivers a complete animatic of the pilot.

The creator

she literally does it all

Steph Kowal does three jobs at once. She's the creator and writer of Adulting, a working composer for film and media, and a daily cartoonist whose comics reach an audience she built strip by strip, specifically to bring this show to life. When Adulting reaches its scoring stage, the person writing the music is the person who created the show.

Adulting was produced with Studio Smokescreen, the studio behind this platform, through a full professional campaign. It was budgeted by a line producer, backed by a Women in Animation partnership, and championed publicly by major animation creators. The show didn't fail. The wall did.

The plan

the to-do list, done right this time

When Adulting opens, it won't ask for $100,000 behind one checkbox. It'll be a list. Each item pays for something real, has its own reachable goal, and unlocks the next. Here's the preview. Final figures land with the launch announcement.

To-do 1 · The Blueprint

Pre-production · opens at launch
OPENS AT LAUNCH

Funds: script polish, character and background design, storyboards, and a fully timed animatic of the whole pilot with scratch dialogue.

You get, when this item is greenlit The complete animatic. The entire episode, watchable, before a dollar goes to animation. Sized so last time's backers could clear it.

To-do 2 · First Laugh

Proof-of-concept scene
AWAITING GREENLIGHT

Funds: one fully animated, colored scene. The sisters at full chaos, in the clip that shows exactly how the series looks, moves, and lands a joke.

You get, when this item is greenlit The finished scene, backers first, built to be shared everywhere.

To-do 3 · Voices & Score

Sound · scored by Steph herself
AWAITING GREENLIGHT

Funds: the voice cast, sound design, and an original score composed by the show's own creator, who happens to be a professional film composer.

You get, when this item is greenlit The animatic with real voices and Steph's score. The pilot starts to sound alive.

To-do 4 · The Pilot

Full animation
AWAITING GREENLIGHT

Funds: animation, color, and compositing of the full episode.

You get, when this item is greenlit The finished pilot. And whatever happens after, items 1 through 3 are already yours. Nobody leaves with nothing.
The honest math, up front. Adult-comedy animation at this style runs roughly $8k to $14k per finished minute. That's why the old campaign needed $100,000 for a pilot, and why one giant wall was never the right shape for it. The full budget for every to-do item, line by line, publishes with the launch. Follow the show above and it lands in your inbox first.
